Honda Introduces an All-New Mini Minivan

The Honda N Box Plus is debuting this month, a tiny minivan that features a boxy body style and comes in smaller than the Scion xB. Destined to sell about 3,000 units per month in Japan, the automaker hasn't announced plans to bring this vehicle stateside, a model that features a short hood, sliding rear side doors and a sloped floor with an attachable aluminum slope for easy rear access.

July Debut

Honda plans to offer the N Box Plus with a two-tone color style. Different color styles will be offered for the roof and the body, a model that is base on the current N Box. That vehicle made its debut last December; the Plus version comes out in July and features a customizable multi-space system behind the front row.

That system provides five different layouts including a lower-level mode, an upper-level mode, a slope mode, a bed mode and a flat mode. Each mode has its own advantages for maximizing seating, storage and even sleeping capabilities. Figure that such a vehicle is designed to appeal to city owners and outdoors enthusiasts alike, people who want prize versatility as well as practicality.

Universal Bridge

The N Box Plus features a unique "universal bridge" that combines a sloped floor and an attachable slope for ease of rear access. Pull out the attachable slope and you can move items in and out with ease. Imagine rolling in a garage sale find instead of lifting that heavy item into the back of your vehicle. Your back will be glad and your find will have a reduced chance of breaking with tie-downs in place.

Sitting on a 99.2-inch wheelbase, the N Box is 133.7 inches long, 58.1 inches wide and is 69.7 inches tall. This front-wheel-drive model weighs in at just 2,050 pounds and offers a 9.3-gallon fuel tank. Seating four passengers, the N Box is powered by a 660CC three-cylinder engine that is paired with a continuously variable transmission.

U.S. Market

Although Honda has no plans to bring the N Box to the U.S. market, a larger model based on its design might do quite well in North America. The Honda Element was discontinued after the 2011 model year has yet to be replaced. A new model that brings in the N Box's utility, but offering a footprint similar to the Element might appeal to the American car buyer. That vehicle, of course, would have to offer a much larger engine and seating for up to five adults if it were to have a chance of finding a home here.
